Nature Study
How does a rose smell? What does it feel like? What colors does it come in? What does a rose need to grow?… So much to learn and enjoy!
Recently I wrote an article about the Scientific Method. Making observations about life, asking tough questions, and testing hypothesizes are an important part of science. Another important aspect of science has to do with learning about and enjoying the natural world in which we live. Young children love to smell, touch, taste, look at and enjoy the world around them. Sometimes living in the city can hinder our appreciation and enjoyment of the natural world. By bringing plants and animals into the school environment the children are given opportunities to interact with and explore the many wondrous things there are in nature to enjoy.
A while back I popped into the Beehive Blue class at Do Quang when they were enjoying one such opportunity to increase their appreciation for nature. When I came into their classroom they were exploring the roses that one of the teachers had brought from the market. In sitting down with them I watched how much they enjoyed those roses (something us big people sometimes take for granted). Together with their teacher they smelled…they felt…they made observations…and they talked about how to take care of roses and other plants. Through their enthusiasm I was reminded to take time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Thank you children for reminding me!
